Using the power of sport as a tool for social change

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was founded in 2000 by DaimlerChrysler and Richemont and is supported by its Founding Partners Mercedes-Benz and IWC Schaffhausen. It celebrates the universal power of sport to bring people together as a force for good and uses the passion that sport inspires to effect social change across the globe.

Based in London, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is a registered UK charity (Charity No. 1111364).

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is an apolitical charitable initiative that uses the positive influence of sport to tackle society's most pressing challenges around the globe, supporting projects on every continent.

According to Academy member Boris Becker, the secret and the strength of sport is that “it has its own rules, it knows no skin colour, no religion, no boundaries.”

Projects worldwide striving to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals are supported by the Global Foundation and a growing network of subsidiary National Foundations in Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Spain, and the United States.

There is much work to be done and as Academy member Nawal El Moutawakel said, “We cannot change the world overnight but we can start one playing field at a time.”

Mission

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.” Nelson Mandela, Laureus World Sports Awards, Monaco 2000.

The vision of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation as elaborated above by Laureus' Patron Nelson Mandela is "Sport has the power to change the world."

Its mission is to use the power of sport to address social challenges through the support of sports-related community development initiatives, using sport as a tool for social change.

Edwin Moses, the Foundation's Chairman, summed up Laureus' bold mission with the following words: "As long as there are people on the ground who are inspired enough to give up their time to set up these projects, you'll find Laureus there to support them. Wherever you look, you'll see Laureus Academy members striving to establish new projects, whether it’s Emerson Fittipaldi in Brazil, Morné du Plessis in South Africa, Hugo Porta in Argentina, Boris Becker in Germany or Kapil Dev in India. These are men and women who achieved what they did in sport because they never gave up. That energy and drive now goes into Laureus, and the beneficiaries are underprivileged youngsters around the world."

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation's objective is to help young people overcome the limitations imposed by challenging social issues including poverty, homelessness, war, violence, drug abuse, discrimination and AIDS.

Academy Members

The Laureus World Sports Academy is an unprecedented collection of the world’s most legendary athletes from disciplines as diverse as football, golf, track and field, skateboarding, swimming, tennis and motor racing. They act as global ambassadors and guardians of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, volunteering their time to visit projects in order to draw attention to the problems afflicting society. During these visits, project participants come face to face with sporting heroes, inspiring them to push their limits and overcome their personal challenges. The members of the Academy share a belief in the power of sport to break down barriers, to bring people together and improve their lives.
