ROME, July 12, 2010 - The final of the Mercedes-Trophy took place near Rome this weekend in association with Fondazione Laureus Italia,the Italian branch of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
Diana Luna, leading golfer and member of the European Solheim Cup team, who recently returned to golf after having a baby, joined the event to offer her support to competitors.
The Mercedes-Trophy has taken in 61 venues over the course of the year culminating in this weekend's final in Saturnia.
Diana Luna said: "I'm delighted to be involved with Laureus. This is a great competition and I'm proud to be involved. Laureus carries out such great work in Italy helping troubled communities through sport and I fully support the work that they are doing."
Laureus Italy Foundation Director Silvana De Giovanni said: "The Mercedes-Trophy has been a terrific event and has given us chance to spread the Laureus message across Italy.
"We're dealing with some very important issues that affect young people in Italy, such as social integration, family breakdown and drug abuse and we've had some tremendous results. Raising awareness about Laureus can only benefit us in the long term."
Every year, more than 57,000 people from over 38 countries participate in the Mercedes-Trophy, where they have the chance to admire new Mercedes-Benz cars and bid for a professional day playing golf. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in Italy runs three projects including La Palla Storta and Progetto Polisportiva I and II which help disadvantaged children through sporting and educational projects.
The Laureus Foundation addresses social challenges through a worldwide programme of sports related community development initiatives. Since its inception Laureus has raised more than €35 million for projects which have helped to improve the lives of over one million young people. Laureus currently supports 78 community sports projects around the world.
The Foundation addresses issues in particular involving, but not limited to, young people impacted by social exclusion, gun and gang violence, discrimination, community integration, peace and reconciliation, and education.
