Project overview
South African football legend John Moeti and his wife Tshidi are the inspiration behind Free the Youth, in Zevenfontein. Many inhabitants of the area have migrated from the country to the town in search of employment only to find themselves in a virtual prison of poverty, crime and HIV/AIDS.
The project combines life skills and sport as a tool to educate and encourage the youngsters, aged 12 – 15, teaching sex education, public speaking, how to handle peer pressure, as well as encouraging healthy living.
How we achieve these goals
Free the Youth is a modular-based programme combining life skills and sport as a tool to educate and encourage young people, aged between 12 - 15. The programme teaches sex education, public speaking, how to handle peer pressure as well as encouraging healthy living through sport involvement. It aims to stimulate a culture of sport and recreation through regular soccer clinics and coaching sessions and to empower a core group of coaches to act as mentors to youngsters, who grow up in families where consistent parental guidance is absent.
Our impact so far
So far, the Free the Youth project has changed the lives of 5720 children.
