Project overview
After-School All-Stars Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) was founded by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2002. ASAS-LA is a leading after-school program with the mission to educate, enlighten, and inspire thousands of K-12 students each day. Programming is centered on health, fitness, nutrition, the visual and performing arts, youth leadership, and community service. We serve 5,000 students daily at 37 schools located in high risk areas throughout LA County. Elementary, middle, and high school programs are all offered by ASAS-LA.
How we achieve these goals
ASAS-LA has a three-pillar strategy at each of its sites. Academics come first, and all youth must complete their homework before participating in other activities. Visual and Performing Arts programs provide unique activities such as hip-hop dance, film-making classes, and fashion design where students plan and produce events for their peers. The Health, Nutrition, and Physical Fitness programs offer activities that include all students’ physical abilities such as culinary arts, team sports, and yoga that work to address fitness and healthy living. The Entourage Program is dedicated to helping young people understand the definition of leadership and its roles and applications in different parts of students’ lives.
Our impact so far
A recent program evaluation showed that After-School All-Star youth have fewer suspensions, fewer regular school-day absences, and greater academic achievement gains. Additionally, 92% of participants agreed either a little or a lot that the All-Stars program was a safe place to go after school. Finally, a vast majority of students reported making new friends, developing positive relationships with caring adults, and feeling better about themselves after being a part of the All-Stars program.
