CAA uses sport as the hook to interest young people, selecting activities as varied as soccer and skateboarding. Its coaches are trained to give nutritional education, to advise on physical activity and encourage academic goal-setting in communities where obesity rates and dropout rates are the highest in the nation.
CAA was started as an AmeriCorps programme through the support of the Corporation for National and Community Service. Now it is operated by Up2Us, a national non-profit organisation that is dedicated to advancing sports as a solution to the critical challenges facing youth in America.
Laureus USA has supported Coach Across America since September 2011 and has committed funds for the training and placement of 250 coaches across the country, with a focus on New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and New Orleans.
The overall goal is to reach 40,000 young people and 100 different communities in these cities.
With Laureus support, CAA will be able to expand its reach to help more children and communities then ever before.
