Our Challenges

Even now, at the start of the 21st century, too many of the world's children are living lives of terrible hardship.

Laureus uses the power of sport to help tackle the causes of this hardship through a worldwide programme of community sports projects that combat social challenges facing children and young people, such as violence and crime, discrimination, lack of education, unemployment and preventable diseases.

Every programme which we support is addressing at least one of the following six social issues, which are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Health: Enhancing mental wellbeing and encouraging healthy behaviour change
  • Education: Increased access to and completion of education
  • Women and Girls: Promoting equality, empowerment and safety
  • Employability: Developing skills and creating pathways to employment
  • Inclusive Society: Creating communities which embrace ethnic, cultural and physical differences
  • Peaceful Society: Resolving conflict, promoting community peace-building and creating safe spaces

To do this, Laureus Sport for Good brings people together who share a belief in the power of sport to break down barriers, to engage with others and to change the world for the better by inspiring hope and positive change.

Sport is the universal language capable of this inspiration.

And it is through the integrity of the Laureus World Sports Academy Members, the work of Laureus Sport for Good  and its projects around the world along with the celebration of the Laureus World Sports Awards this belief in Sport for Good is growing stronger and stronger.
