The Laureus World Sports Academy is a unique association of 46 of the greatest living legends of sports ranging from football, tennis, athletics, skateboarding to motor racing.
It is, however, a very exclusive club, a true hall of fame of the world’s sport heroes.
So rare is it to be invited into the Academy, in fact, the last time any names were added was back in 2011 when Steve Redgrave and Mick Doohan joined in recognition of their contributions to rowing and motorcycling respectively.
Though their sports may differ, all the members of the Academy share a belief in the power of sport to break down barriers, bring people together and improve the lives of young people around the world.
Laureus World Sports Academy members regularly visit the numerous projects supported by Laureus. On these occasions, young people come face to face with their sporting heroes. It is hoped having these role models visit is an uplifting experience for the children.
Past projects have seen Marcel Desailly visit Ghana, Boris Becker travel to a Haitian football project and Sean Fitzpatrick teach the Haka to kids in Rio
In addition, the Laureus World Sports Academy is the ultimate sports jury, voting each year to decide the winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards.
