A host of Laureus Academy Member sand Ambassadors were in Switzerland this weekend to help raise funds for the Foundation, and ended up receiving a cheque of €368000 to help further use sport as a tool for social change in the country.
At the event were sport stars such as US swimming legend Mark Spitz, Romanian athletics icon Nadia Comaneci, Boris Becker, Marcel Desailly and Edwin Moses, together with distinguished personalities from the cultural and business worlds gathered yesterday in the hangar of the Dübendorf Air Force Centre, to raise money for the Laureus Foundation Switzerland.
Donations were raised from an auction with some truly memorable prizes including a trip to the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards in Rio, a sailing cruise with explorer and adventurer Mike Horn, and a passenger’s seat in the Mille Miglia.
The money raised from the event will go directly to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in Switzerland.
The event also marked a bitter-sweet moment for the Foundation in Switzerland as Urs Lehmenn handed over the office of Foundation President to Rolf Theiler.
Lehmann said: “I have enjoyed many wonderful and interesting years as Foundation President. However now it’s time to hand over the sceptre.”
But the words of Rolf Theiler suggest the Swiss Foundation is in very safe hands. “I am highly motivated and very happy about this new challenge. That such a large amount was collected for our projects is the perfect kick-off”.
