Over 65,000 has been raised today for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in Germany at the Mercedes-Benz Charity Golf Tournament, which was held at the Seddiner See Golf Club in Berlin.
A host of Laureus supporters were present during the tournament. These included patron of the tournament and Laureus Academy Member Franz Beckenbauer, Laureus Ambassador Christa Kinshofer, former German national footballers Oliver Kahn, Andreas Brehme, Bernd Hoelzenbein, Stefan Reuter and Marko Rehmer and professional golfer Marcel Siem. Laureus Award Nominee Maria Höfl-Riesch was also in attendance.
And giving insight into his work with Laureus and the importance of this donation, Beckenbauer said: "I am delighted that more than €65,000 has come together for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in Germany.
“My commitment to the Laureus Foundation is a labour of love for me. Values ??in everyday and professional life such as team spirit, respect and discipline are important, and through our social sports projects, we teach these to socially disadvantaged children and young people. Religion, nationality and skin colour does not matter. Sport is a universal language that everyone understands."
Walter Mueller, director of the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Berlin, added: “This donation of more than €65,000 for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in Germany will benefit needy children and young people in Berlin. I would like to thank Franz Beckenbauer and all the generous donors, without whom the success of this event would not be possible. The great ideas Laureus has? deserve our strong support."
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation now supports over 100 sports projects around the world. Speaking about this incredible milestone, Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, said: "100 Laureus projects is a real milestone. I’m very happy that we have achieved this. At the beginning of our initiative, we had six projects in four different cities. I do not think any of us believed that we would reach the 100 mark so quickly. In the last five years, Laureus has grown enormously. It's great that now we can help so many children in different parts of the world."
