Brilliant young Formula One racer Nico Rosberg has been named the newest Laureus Ambassador.
And the hugely popular German star, who drives for the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, made an immediate contribution to the charity work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
Nico hosted a visit to the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza circuit for young leaders from Laureus-supported projects in Italy, facilitated by IWC Schaffhausen, the Official Engineering Partner to the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.
Nico was welcomed to the Laureus Family by German football legend and Laureus World Sports Academy Member Franz Beckenbauer. Franz said: “On behalf of the Laureus Academy, I am delighted to be at Monza to welcome Nico as a Laureus Ambassador. Nico is a brilliant driver with a wonderful future ahead of him. He is also a man who cares passionately about young people. The future of sport lies in the hands of people like Nico who know that not only do you have to be the best in your chosen sport, but you have to understand how important it is to help people less fortunate than yourself.”
The young Laureus Foundation sport for development leaders were treated to an unforgettable Formula One moment, walking the paddock, having lunch in the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS motor home and sharing stories and experiences with Nico ahead of the world-famous Monza race.
Nico, who has won three Grands Prix since he joined Formula One in 2006, is the son of Finnish Formula One driver Keke Rosberg, winner of the 1982 World Championship. This year he has already won two of the sport’s great classic races at Monaco and Silverstone.
Nico, who is multilingual in five languages, said: “I am delighted to become a Laureus Ambassador. We all know how effective sport can be in tackling problems and bringing people together. That is at the heart of the Laureus philosophy and it is what I believe too. The work Laureus does around the world is amazing and I look forward to be being able to do what I can to help.
“I enjoyed meeting the guys from the Laureus projects here at Monza and talking about what they had achieved and sharing a few stories. I hope they will be inspired by the fact they have been chosen to come here and can go back and become role models in their projects for the other young people there.”
