It is appropriate that Pieter van den Hoogenband is up for the same award as Ian Thorpe, as it was this duel that captivated the viewing public during the Sydney Olympic Games. van den Hoogenband came out of Sydney with two Olympic golds that many had earmarked for Thorpe - in the 100m and 200m freestyle and into the record books.
