Winner
It is fair to say that Cathy Freeman approached the 2000 Olympic Games with some pressure on her shoulders. Unbeaten in the previous year in the 400m and becoming World Champion in the process, Freeman was considered the poster girl of the Games - even lighting the Olympic flame in the opening ceremony.
In her distinctive all-in-one running suit, Freeman cut a swathe through the field to justify the home fans' belief and winning one of the most iconic gold medals of all time.
