Justine Henin rocketed to prominence on the 2001 WTA Tour, reaching her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon where she lost in three sets to defending champion Venus Williams after beating Jennifer Capriati in the semi-finals.
She also reached the last four at the French Open where she led fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters by a set and a break before losing in three sets. As well as making her mark in the Grand Slam tournaments, Henin won titles at the Gold Coast, Canberra and 's-Hertogenbosch. She finished the season a career-high seven in the world and helped Belgium win the Fed Cup in November, with Russia the beaten finalists in Madrid.
