Established himself as one of the very best speedskaters of all-time by winning two gold medals and a silver at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Set a world record of six minutes 14.66 seconds in the 5,000 metres final on February 9 and then became the first person to break the 13-minute barrier over 10,000 metres on February 22, clocking 12 minutes, 58.92 seconds to secure his second gold medal of the Games.
