Esther Vergeer is the most famous disabled sportsperson in Holland and one of the greatest wheelchair tennis players of all time.  She was the winner of the 2002 Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability and was a nominee for the Award in 2005 and 2006.
She has utterly dominated her sport for many years and 2006 was no exception. She won all her singles matches during the year – making her undefeated for three straight years - remained No.1 in the singles world rankings, won the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters and was a member of the Dutch women’s team which won the World Team Cup.
Her performance followed on from an equally glittering 2005 when she became ITF Tennis World Champion for the sixth successive year.  Her win-loss record that year on the Wheelchair Tennis Tour was a remarkable 55-0.
