The young Spaniard took over from Roger Federer as World No 1 in August 2008 - one of the highlights of another extremely successful year. During the season, he won the Olympic gold medal in Beijing, secured his fourth straight French Open Grand Slam title and won his first Wimbledon crown, beating Federer on his favourite grass surface.
He also reached the semi-finals of the Australian and US Opens. He is the first Spaniard during the Open Era to finish the year as the World No 1.
