Darren Kenny
In the Beijing Paralympic Games, British cyclist Darren Kenny won four gold and one silver medals. His gold medals came in the men’s team sprint, the individual pursuit, the men’s road race and the 1km time trial. He turned to Paralympic cycling after an accident at the age of 18 during the 1988 Junior Tour of Ireland resulted in a serious neck injury.
As he says, he was “just lying on the sofa putting on weight and on heavy medication”. However he began cycling again in 2000 and won two gold medals and a silver at the Athens Paralympic Games of 2004, a success which he then improved upon in Beijing.
