South African Louis Oosthuizen won his first major championship and it could not have come at a more appropriate time and place than at the Open Championship at St Andrews.
Oosthuizen went into the event ranked just 54th in the world and having only made one cut in eight major championship appearances. He shot a 65 on the first day, placing him in second place, behind a 63 shot by Rory McIlroy, and his 67 on the Friday was the low round of the day which gave him a lead that he would not relinquish throughout the final two rounds.
His two-day total of 132 tied the record for the lowest 36-hole score in an Open Championship at St Andrews. A 69 on Saturday placed Oosthuizen at 15-under-par, and four shots clear of second-place Paul Casey with one round to play.
After resisting a fightback from Paul Casey, his four round score of 272 was the second lowest in St Andrews history. He became the fourth South African after Bobby Locke, Gary Player and Ernie Els to win The Open.
