At 20, became the first UK swimmer to win three gold medals at a single World Championships, winning the 50m breaststroke in a world record time of 26.42, the 100m breaststroke and the 4x100m mixed medley. He is also the first swimmer to win both sprint breaststroke events at the same World Championships. At the British Championships in April he became the first man to swim under 58 seconds in the 100 metres breastroke, with a world record time of 57.92, beating the old record by half a second.
