Ethiopia's Almaz Ayanasmashed the world record by over 14 seconds to win the Olympic gold medal in the women's 10,000 metres in Rio. The 24-year-old, racing the distance on the track for only the second time, finished in 29 mins 17.45 secs. The old record, set by China’s Junxia Wang, had stood for nearly 23 years. No other athlete had previously managed to get within 22 seconds of Wang's time. She also won the bronze medal in Rio in the 5,000 metres.
