Hamilton’s ‘greatest moment’ makes him strong contender for Laureus Award

“This is the greatest moment of my life” are the words Lewis Hamilton radioed to his crew moments after racing past the chequered flag at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. Hamilton secured a third Formula One World Championship at the United States Grand Prix yesterday after winning his tenth race of the season.

A third World Championship puts his name among the top drivers in the history Formula One, matching racing greats like his idol Ayrton Senna, and tying Jackie Stewart for most championships by a British driver. Only Michael Schumacher (7), Juan Manuel Fangio (5), Alain Prost (4) and Sebastian Vettel (4) have won more.

After a dominant season which saw him secure a second consecutive World Championship, Lewis Hamilton looks a strong contender to clinch another spot in the Laureus World Sports Awards Nominations shortlist. Hamilton won the 2008 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year and was nominated in the Sportsman of the Year Category in the latest edition of the Awards, losing to world No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic.

Hamilton’s Mercedes AMG PETRONAS teammate Nico Rosberg, who is a Laureus Ambassador, did lead the race for some time and finished second behind Hamilton and in front of third place Sebastian Vettel.

Ever since the Shanghai Grand Prix, the 2015 Formula One season has seen Nico Rosberg and the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team combine charity with both success and driving for a good cause: for every kilometre Nico Rosberg is in the lead, Mercedes-Benz donates 100 euros to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. With this #DriveforGood initiative, Nico has managed to raise almost €70,000 for Laureus so far this year.
