Having missed the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a stress fracture of the ankle, Britain’s Jessica Ennis came back in style after 12 months out of action to win the heptathlon gold medal in the World Championships in Berlin with a personal best of 6,731. It was Britain’s first ever heptathlon gold medal at the World Championships.
In a brilliant 2009, she had earlier produced a new personal best at the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge in Desenzano del Garda with 6,587 points, which included an 800 metres best and a combined events javelin best.  Her performance broke Liliana Nastase’s 16-year-old meeting record.
After her win in Berlin, Jessica said: "I was at such a low point last year. Beijing was going to be my first Olympics and I was really looking forward to it, so to come back from that and so strongly, it's amazing. I was so worried. I didn't know what kind of shape I'd be in and this year has just gone from strength to strength and now I'm world champion.”
