Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro returned to competition in February, after long absences with a wrist injury. He started the year ranked 1,042, but gave one of the best displays of his career in the Rio Olympics, defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the first round and eventually reaching the final where he lost to Andy Murray, but won the silver medal. In November he came back from two sets down to win a crucial match against Marin Cilic to help Argentina win the Davis Cup for the first time.
