With the world continuing to adjust and starting to recover from the COVD-19 pandemic, Laureus sporting legends from around the world are uniting and calling on the global sporting community to join the virtual Move the World Challenge and help raise vital funds to support the work of Laureus Sport for Good.
A partnership between Laureus and Just Challenge, the Move the World Challenge
asks participants to join together with family, friends, colleagues or sports clubs and either create or join a team on the Challenge portal and walk, jog, run, swim or cycle tracking all activity through Strava.
Laureus legends Sean Fitzpatrick, Bryan Habana, Steve Waugh, Nolli Waterman, Michael Vaughan, Nicol David and Annabelle Bond have so far signed up to take part, and will offer insights into their own careers and share advice with participants through exclusive virtual masterclasses throughout the Challenge.
Participants are requested to make a donation of $10 and raise funds throughout the Challenge, with all funds raised will go towards helping vulnerable children and young people affected by Covid-19 through the Sport for Good Response Fund
. With 2.34 billion children having been under some form of confinement due to COVID-19, this increases their risk of exposure to violence, including sexual abuse, exploitation and challenges to their mental health.
The Sport for Good Response Fund aims to ensure that sport for development programmes are empowered to deliver new or adaptive provision to continue supporting children and young people during the current pandemic. The Fund will also offer financial support to the sports-based development programmes at the heart of communities around the world so that they can withstand the challenges of this immediate stage and help build stronger young people once restrictions are lifted.
Sean Fitzpatrick, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy and All Blacks rugby legend, said: “Over the last twenty years, I’ve been fortunate enough to see the transformational power sport can have in changing young lives through the inspirational work of Laureus Sport for Good. In 2020, the need for this work is greater than ever. Being part of a team and participating in sport changed my life and through the Move the World Challenge, families, friends and colleagues have the chance to unite in teams, get active, have fun, and raise vital funds to help Laureus change lives through sport.”
