Laureus Sport for Good Night raises funds in Germany and Austria
The Laureus Sport for Good Weekend has come to a conclusion with the remarkable total of 805,850 being raised to continue the work of sport for development projects in Germany and Austria.
The proceeds were raised from a charity auction of money-can’t-buy items held during the Laureus Sport for Good Night in Munich on Saturday. But the generosity of the evening didn’t stop there.
The Foundation also announced the incredible donation of €3 million from the Dietmar Hopp Foundation.
The funds raised will be used to support Laureus projects in Germany and Austria.
Sabine Christiansen, deputy chairperson of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Germany/Austria, said: "This is a fantastic result from a wonderful evening . With the proceeds from the Laureus Sport for Good Night, and the donation from the Dietmar Hopp Foundation, we can continue to support our twelve Laureus Laureus projects in the long term and create new projects. I want to thank the Dietmar Hopp Foundation on behalf of Laureus for this incredibly generous donation.”
And Dietmar Hopp said: "In sport, children and young people meet the challenges of daily life. Sport teaches you to work within a team and take responsibility . That is why the promotion of youth sports is one of the focal points of my foundation. Together with Laureus, we want to get kids moving and thereby promote their social skills.”
Earlier in the day at the Laureus Sport for Good golf tournament, Academy Member Boris Becker welcomed German professional golfer Marcel Siem as a new Laureus Ambassador.
Becker said: "I am very pleased to welcome Marcel Siem into the Laureus family. Marcel is an athlete for whom corporate social responsibility is very important. He wants to work for disadvantaged children and young people and therefore it is the right place for him to be a part of Laureus."
Marcel Siem added: "For me, it is a great honour and pleasure to be able to support the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation together with other athletes. I have been following the great work of Laureus for some time and am now an active member of the Laureus family.”
