Double Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton is getting back in the saddle after signing up to join Michael Vaughan on the PruProtect Chance to Ride charity bike ride taking place later this year.
Now she wants YOU to join as well.
The bike ride is open to cyclists of all abilities and Vaughan is looking for 50 fundraisers per stage to join him and his band of sports stars like Victoria, cricketers, commentators and other celebrities on this unique challenge.
Victoria will join the stage that takes in a trip to the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, where she trained during a career in which she won nine world titles including a record six in the individual sprint competition, dominating the event between 2005 and 2012 and winning Olympic gold in 2008. She added to that with a keirin gold in 2012. She will also take part in the road cycling that will include an optional time trial speed challenge for the the riders taking part.
On joining the charity ride, she said: “After months of competing against each other during Strictly Come Dancing last year, it will be great to support Michael on his bike ride and help raise funds for charity. I was in Rio for the Laureus Awards earlier this year and it’s great to be able to support organisations that help children through sport.
“The velodrome in Manchester holds fond memories for me and it will be great to meet some of the fundraisers taking part in the ride.”
The event is all in support of fantastic casues and will raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Cricket Foundation’s Chance to Shine initiative.
Vaughan commented: “I went to the National Cycling Centre in Manchester recently and trained where Victoria and other British cycling greats have been put through their paces. Knowing her, any hopes I had of taking it easy between Manchester and Birmingham will be forgotten – she’s bound to make sure I sprint as much as possible!”
The Chance to Ride peloton will follow the England v Australia - NatWest One Day International series, starting at Headingley, Leeds, on September 6 and traveling to each of the venues before ending in London on September 17. Each of the four stages will include a healthy mix of cycling and a day (or days) at the cricket.
All those joining will be offered training and fundraising advice to participants. So if you are interested in taking part in any of the individual stages, or taking part in the whole 12 day challenge, and raising funds for Laureus and Chance to Shine head to www.chancetoride.co.uk
