KUALA LUMPUR, February 26, 2014 – American sport is celebrating after receiving a record 12 Nominations for the 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards. US sporting giants of today and brilliant young prospects for the future have been selected, following a ballot by the world’s media

 

The 15^th Laureus World Sports Awards, which recognise sporting achievement during the calendar year 2013, is the premier honours event on the international sporting calendar. The winners, as voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of 46 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time, will be unveiled at a globally televised Awards Ceremony staged in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday, March 26.

 

Three-time Laureus Award recipient Serena Williams, winner of the French Open and US Open, plus eight other tennis tournaments in 2013, is nominated for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award along with teenage swimmer Missy Franklin, a sensation in Barcelona, who became the first woman to win six gold medals at a single World Championships.

 

LeBron James is nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award, after his fourth regular season NBA MVP award in five years, while his team Miami Heat is short-listed for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award, after their second straight NBA Championship. Also selected for the Team Award are the Bryan Twins, Bob and Mike, who achieved a historic ‘Golden Slam’ as they won their third Wimbledon to become the first tennis doubles pair to hold all four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold medal at the same time.

 

The Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award is dominated by American contenders. Tiger Woods, who won in 2000, the inaugural year of Laureus, is selected again, after returning to the summit of world golf, along with Oracle Team USA, who fought back from 8-1 down to win the America’s Cup, and US-based Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs’ guard, who was named MVP playing for France in basketball’s European Championship after recovering from a serious eye injury.

 

Another category with a strong US presence is the Laureus World Action Sports Award. Former Laureus Award winner Shaun White, who secured a sixth consecutive X Games SuperPipe gold medal, is nominated again, as is US-based British-born BMX star Jamie Bestwick, the only athlete in X Games history to win eight straight gold medals, and surfer John John Florence, who scored a perfect 10 for completing the Alley Oop trick in Bali.

 

During 2013, American wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden not only won six gold medals, but also won the four big city marathons - Boston, Chicago, London and New York – and is a worthy Nominee for the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award.

 

Laureus World Sports Academy Chairman Edwin Moses said: “This has been a brilliant year for American sport and this is well reflected in the Nominations received in the poll of the world’s media. I recall that the US has had 11 Nominations before, but this is a first. It’s great to see Nominations covering such a spread of sports. Serena Williams has won three Laureus Awards and she is a perennial Nominee after yet another great year, then you have the Bryan Twins, who have made it into the Team category, and of course Tiger Woods is back – he won in the very first year of Laureus, 15 years ago. There’s LeBron James and Miami Heat of course, I expected them to be there, and I am especially thrilled to see Tatyana McFadden in the list. I know how hard disabled athletes work and if you look at what she achieved last year you could make a case for her to be a contender for the Sportswoman of the Year Award as well.”

The 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards Nominations were announced in a series of global events in Kuala Lumpur, London and New York. Proceeds from the Laureus World Sports Awards directly benefit and underpin the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which supports more than 140 community sports projects in 34 countries. Since its inception, Laureus has raised over €60 million for projects which have improved the lives of more than one-and-a-half million young people.

There is a two-part voting process to find the winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards.  Firstly, a Selection Panel of the world’s leading sports editors, writers and broadcasters from over 120 countries votes to create a shortlist of six Nominations in various categories, including Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year, Laureus World Team of the Year, Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year and Laureus World Comeback of the Year.  Then the members of the Laureus World Sports Academy vote by secret ballot to select the Award winners from the shortlist. The Laureus Academy Members also vote for the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disabilityand the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year, the Nominations for which are made by specialist panels.
