Joe Thompson Wins in May

Joe Thompson, LSM Nominee
Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson has won the May Laureus Sporting Moment of the Month public vote. Joe was recognised for his resilience and bravery in his fight against Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer he has beaten twice. The 29-year-old made an emotional return to play for Rochdale in their FA Cup replay against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, realising a dream of playing at the National Stadium.
Reflecting on his victory in the May Laureus Sporting Moment of the Month public vote, Joe Thompson said: “Thank you so much to everyone for the incredible support which has helped me win the Laureus Sporting Moment public vote for May. I hope my story offered hope or a little inspiration to people out there. Being nominated for the Award was an honour but to win it is just incredible. This is for anyone out there who is fighting for something in their life. Never give up.
Joe becomes the third Nominee for the Laureus Sporting Moment of the Year, joining March campaign winners and ski jumping legends Sven Hannawald and Kamil Stoch and April winner Doddie Weir. Each month, from March to December, the public can select their favourite Moment from a shortlist of four videos, chosen by the sporting legends of the Laureus World Sports Academy. Monthly winners will then go head-to-head in a final public vote, with the winner being announced at the 2019 Laureus Awards Ceremony.
The Laureus Sporting Moment Award demonstrates qualities such as fair play, sportsmanship, drama and dedication, and looks beyond the scoreboard or podium. They are emotional and inspirational moments, symbolising the true value of sport and bringing to life the message that sport has the power to change the world.
