Spain and Manchester United football star Juan Mata is to be patron of a new university scholarship, supported by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
The scholarship is being set up at the University Camilo José Cela in Madrid, which Mata attended, and will fund the studies of a young athlete with limited personal resources.
Laureus Ambassador Mata, who studied Science of Physical Activity and Sport at the university, said:
“For me it´s a privilege to be the ‘godfather’ of an initiative like this. I believe that to join education and sport together is always positive and can help improve our society. I hope this scholarship helps to achieve this.”
The University Camilo José Cela is acknowledged to be outstanding for its work with sport, with both professionals and amateurs.
Eduardo Nolla, Dean of the university, said: “For us, as an education entity, it is essential to get our students close to the values of dedication, overcoming problems and work that sport represents and that the Laureus Foundation spreads. We are convinced we will do many projects together.”
The Laureus Foundation in Spain works every day to help improve the lives of hundreds of children and young adults through the use of sport. The two organisations hope to start new initiatives based on the values inherent in sport to encourage a healthy lifestyle, to encourage integration and combat social exclusion.
