Laureus Sport for Good and the Swedish Postcode Foundation (Svenska Postkodstiftelsen) have revealed a new initiative to help boost the sport for development sector in Sweden.
The Swedish Sport for Development Accelerator Programme will focus on three key elements to help sport for development organisations, with the first initial phase focusing on organisational development and learning support. The following elements will involve research-based and networking opportunities within the sector.
Launching today, ‘The Practitioner Accelerator’ phase will give these organisations the opportunity to receive a free, 12-month package of training and support that will help them to build more effective and sustainable projects across the country, using sport to help bring about social change.
Edwin Moses, Chairman of Laureus Sport for Good, said: “Laureus Sport for Good is focused on providing meaningful change within the sector and we are delighted to launch this new initiative with the Swedish Postcode Foundation, which will help to kickstart a new era for the sport sector in Sweden and internationally.
“Covid-19 has been so challenging for us all, particularly because of the way it has limited the ability to participate in projects that improve society, and we want to help sporting organisations to develop and grow.”
Marie Dahllöf, Secretary General of The Swedish Postcode Foundation, said: “Sport has the potential to be a great source for change in society and can provide people the tools they need to make a positive impact in their own life – and in the lives of others. The Swedish Postcode Foundation is proud to launch an initiative, together with Laureus Sport for Good, to develop a much-needed sports for good sector in Sweden. Laureus experience and know-how will provide the insight and skills needed to strengthen in order to lay the foundation of a new sector to help address the challenges of our time.”
Kosovare Asllani, Swedish international footballer and Laureus Ambassador, said:
“I’m proud to announce that Laureus Sport for Good and the Swedish Postcode Foundation are partnering to launch this great initiative which will help to strengthen the use of sport to bring about positive change in our country.
“Sweden, like so many other countries, has been massively affected by Covid-19. I truly believe that sport can play a key role in rebuilding people’s lives following the pandemic, support those from disadvantaged backgrounds and tackle violence and discrimination within society.”
Laureus Sport for Good and the Swedish Postcode Foundation have worked together on a number of projects since 2017, promoting and advocating for the key work that sport for development organisations undertake.
The Swedish Postcode Foundation funds initiatives across Sweden and internationally in the areas of sport, culture and the environment, with the aim to create projects that challenge, inspire and promote change in society.
In 2017, the partners hosted the Laureus Sport for Good European Summit near Stockholm, bringing together more than 50 programme leaders from across Europe including Laureus Ambassador and legendary football coach Fabio Capello.
Over the past 21 years, Laureus Sport for Good has raised more than €150m for the Sport for Development sector, reaching and helping change the lives of more than six million children and young people since 2000. Laureus Sport for Good currently supports more than 200 programmes in over 40 countries that use the power of sport to transform lives.
