Pau and Marc Gasol's 'Gasol Foundation' Win Laureus España MARCA Sport for Good Honour
Basketball legends Pau and Marc Gasol's Gasol Foundation win popular vote for prestigious new Spanish award.
BREAKING NEWS: Pau and Marc Gasol and their Gasol Foundation are the first ever recipients of the Laureus España MARCA Sport for Good Honour, presented in Seville. In a global online vote by readers of leading Spanish newspaper MARCA, the Gasol's finished ahead of Carolina Marín and Bádminton Sin Barreras (Badminton without Borders) and Susana Rodríguez with Discamino.
The Laureus Spain MARCA Sport for Good Honour is the fruit of an alliance between Laureus and MARCA which looks to continue Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
In the inaugural Laureus Awards in 2000, President Mandela, the first Patron of Laureus, said: “Sport has the power to change the world” and the award recognises those athletes who not only have enjoyed great success during their sporting careers, but who have also spent their time helping those less fortunate.
The three programmes associated with Pau and Marc Gasol, Carolina Marín and Susana Rodríguez will receive a financial contribution of €25,000, €10,000 and €5,000 respectively, which will go towards their Sport for Good activities in the future.
We are delighted to join with MARCA in the creation of this very special award which honours the enormous efforts of three great sports stars to help young people in Spain. They realise, as does Laureus, that sport goes far beyond what happens on the basketball courts and the sports halls. Congratulations to Pau and Marc Gasol, but I think we all realise that there are four winners here and we salute them.
These programmes will now become affiliated to the Laureus Sport for Good global network, which, since its inception, has helped to improve the lives of over six million young people and currently supports over 250 community programmes in more than 50 countries.
