Lewis Hamilton has joined Formula One’s illustrious ranks of double World Champions after race victory in the season-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix emphatically clinched the 2014 drivers’ title for him.
He joins a number of other drivers on two titles, including his contemporary rival Fernando Alonso. Michael Schumacher is the all-time record holder with seven, while the most successful current driver is this year’s Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Sebastian Vettel on four.
Hamilton, who won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award in 2008, said after the race: “2008 was a great year in my life. The feeling I have now is way, way past that; the greatest feeling ever."
Lewis took top podium followed by a Williams double with Felipe Massa in second and Valtteri Bottas in third.
Hamilton’s Mercedes AMG Petronas teammate and Laureus Ambassador Nico Rosberg’s hunt for a first World Championship came to an end after he suffered car problems and ended the race 14th.
But while Rosberg’s Abu Dhabi campaign may have ended in disappointment, he put that aside to pay a visit to the podium holding room to give a congratulatory embrace to Hamilton.
"Nico put on an incredible fight all year. I'm very sad to know that the car wasn't quick enough so that he could fight but, still, he was a great sport and came up to see me," Hamilton told the crowd after the race.
Merdeces AMG Petronas’ dominance of the 2014 Formula One season has put them on the map for a Laureus World Team of the Year Nomination. Lewis Hamilton’s 11 Grand Prix wins this year, culminating in a second World Championship, will very likely see him get a Nomination for Laureus World Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus Awards in Shanghai next year.
