World’s greatest explorer inspires kids from Laureus project in South Africa

Laureus Academy Member and adventurer extraordinaire, Mike Horn, mentored a group of children from the Laureus-funded Great Commission United (GCU) project at Woodlands Primary School in Cape Town last week.

The South-African born Swiss explorer met with a group of local children from the GCU project and joined them for some fun basketball, skipping, boxing and soccer sessions. He then enthralled the kids with tales from some of the adventures that have earned him the reputation as the world’s greatest modern day explorer, such as swimming with crocodiles on his solo Amazon River navigation. Mike ended his talk by urging the kids to keep striving to achieve their goals, believing that nothing is impossible.

The Great Commission United is a football and basketball orientated project that aims to keep young people from Heideveld and surrounding areas on the Cape Flats away from gangs and crime and plugged into positive influences and aspirations. The project strives to enrich the children’s life experience through sport and to ignite a desire of wanting more from their lives.

Mike Horn is one of the members of The Laureus World Sports Academy, a unique collection of some of the world’s greatest sporting icons. Each Academy Member uses the power of sport to help tackle pressing social challenges through the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation projects.

Since its inception Laureus has raised over €60 million to improve the lives of millions of young people and currently supports more than 150 community sports projects in 34 countries.
