A heartbreaking farewell

There wasn't a dry eye in the Olympic Stadium as Roma bid farewell to Francesco Totti after 28 years with the club. The 40-year-old called time on his Roma career after playing his final match on Sunday 28th May - his 786th appearance. It was the perfect send off for the forward as he came on in the 54th minute to a standing ovation as Roma scored a last minute winner to beat Genoa 3-2 and secure a Champions League group stage spot.
With his three children and his teammates by his side, many sobbing uncontrollably, they waited then for a man who'd given his life and considerable talent to his boyhood team to say his final goodbye. Fans openly wept as they waited to hear from their captain. “You welcomed me as a child and now I leave as a man”, Totti said. Affectionately known by the Roma fans as "Er pupone" (the big baby), he is finally ready to hang up his iconic No. 10 shirt for good. Totti has taken part in 25 Serie A seasons, scored 307 goals and played under three Popes, 17 managers and four Italian Presidents.
