Andy Roddick lived up to all the hype in his first full season as a professional in 2001, reaching the quarter-finals of the prestigious Ericsson Open in March and winning his first ATP Tour title in Atlanta in only his 10th tournament outing.
He picked up his second title a week later in Houston, beating Hyung-Taik Lee in the final. After impressing on clay, Roddick reached the last eight on the hard courts at the Canadian Masters Series and then won in Washington in August. His best Grand Slam showing of the year came at the U.S. Open, where he took eventual winner Lleyton Hewitt to five thrilling sets before going out in the last eight. He ended 2001 as world number 16, despite playing in just 19 tournaments during the year.
