Mozambique’s golden girl, the Olympic, World and Commonwealth 800metres champion, who in 2003 became the first athlete to win the Golden League outright, collecting the US$1 million prize. During the course of a brilliant season, she won 20 races, including the World Championship in Paris in August, to establish herself as the leading 800metres runner of her generation. Her success has been dramatic.
She became Commonwealth champion in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur and retained her title in Manchester in 2002. She won the World Championship in Edmonton in 2001 and won Mozambique’s first ever Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000.
