Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, has praised both Sebastian Coe and Sergey Bubka following their contest to be President of the IAAF, the body that governs world athletics.
Coe beat Bubka for the post and Moses said: “I find it heartening to see Laureus World Sports Academy Members like Seb and Sergey showing that their passion for their sport still burns so brightly.
“I would like to congratulate Seb on his appointment as President of the IAAF and also to commiserate with Sergey. Both were outstanding candidates, but of course there can only be one winner.”
Sean Fitzpatrick, Vice Chair of Laureus, said:
Seb Coe and Sergey Bubka were legendary athletes and both have remained heavily involved in sport, which is great to see. They have also been enthusiastic supporters of the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and we are lucky to have them so committed to what we are trying to do. I am sure Seb will be a great leader of the IAAF, as Sergey would have been, and I wish him the best of luck in this important role.”
Coe, a double Olympic 1,500 metres champion and Chairman of the London 2012 Olympic Games Organising Committee, beat Bubka, an Olympic pole vault champion, by 115 votes to 92.
