Laureus charity football match raises €100,000
14 October 2013
A host of great sport names have helped raise €100,000 for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation at a charity football match in Dresden, Germany.
In front of a crowd over 6,000 strong at the Gluckgas Stadium, and contested between “Team Dresden” and a “Laureus Allstars” Team, the game ended 8-6. And though the Laureus celebrities may have been the losing team, there can be no doubt the funds raised put any disappointment to rest.
After the match, Laureus Ambassador and Germany football legend Jens Lehmann said: “It was a lot of fun to play football for the Laureus Foundation. I am so pleased that through the charity match we could collect such a significant donation. Thanks also to the many spectators who have strongly supported us.”
The funds will go directly to the Laureus Kicking Girls project, of which Lehmann is patron. The sport for development project works across Germany in 19 cities with the aim of helping provide girls with access to local clubs and ensure that, once there, they can be successfully integrated both into the club and society as a whole.
Also playing in the match were football greats Mario Basler, Christian Karembeu , Guido Buchwald , Balakov and Gerald Asamoah. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was also represented by Laureus Ambassadors Ole Bischof , Fredi Bobic, Birgit Prinz and Axel Schulz.
This was the fifth time the charity football match has been held.
