A host of football greats came together in Dresden, Germany last night for a very special charity game to raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
In front of an 8,427-strong crowd at the city’s Gluckgas Stadium, the two teams, named the ‘Sons of Dresden’ and World Cup Heroes, boasted a host of European football royalty including Christian Karembeu, world cup winner Olaf Thon and Laureus Ambassador Jens Lehmann.
And with such names playing, it was no surprise the final goal tally was a big one.
By the final whistle, however, it was the Sons of Dresden who won the game six goals to four.
Of course, the real winners of the match where the young people of the very special Laureus Kicking Girls project, who will benefit from the remarkable €100,000 raised on the night.
The Kicking Girls project works with young girls from ethnic minorities and immigrant backgrounds to further promote integration into society at large. Present at the game were patrons of the project and Laureus Ambassadors Birgit Prinz and Nia Kunzer.
Speaking after the final whistle, Lehmann, the legendary goalkeeper for Arsenal FC, said: “I’m really honoured to be a Laureus Ambassador, the work the Foundation do is great and I am very pleased to be able to help.
“I still love to play in the odd match, but I hate playing in goal these days. So it’s been good to have the chance to play outfield.”
Also taking part was newly-crowned Olympic judo silver medallist Ole Bischof. Talking to us after the match the Laureus Ambassador said: "It’s been a lot of fun to play football for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. I’m very pleased that we’ve collected such a significant donation for Laureus. Thanks also to the many spectators who have supported us so well."
