The young Serbian won his first ever Grand Slam title in 2008, by winning the Australian Open, beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final. He also beat the then World No.1 Roger Federer in straight sets in the semi-final.  The victory meant he became the first player representing Serbia ever to win a Grand Slam singles title and the youngest player in the open era to have reached all four Grand Slam semi-finals. He also won the bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics in August and the Masters Cup in Shanghai in November, when he beat Nikolay Davydenko in the final.
