At the age of 20, Caroline Wozniacki became the second youngest player in WTA history to become world No 1 without having won a Grand Slam.
She also became the first Danish woman to reach the top ranking, following up on her achievements of 2009 when she became the first Danish woman to reach a Grand Slam final, at the US Open where she lost to Kim Clijsters. During the year she won six events – Ponte Vedra Beach, Danish Open, Montreal, New Haven, Toray Pan Pacific Open and the China Open at Beijing.
It was at the China Open in October that she beat Vera Zvonareva in the final to take over Serena Williams’ No 1 ranking. She lost in the final of the end of season Sony Ericsson WTA Championship in Doha to Clijsters once again, but it was enough to ensure that she kept her No 1 ranking at the end of the year.
