The reigning men’s figure skating champion was expected to be one of the outstanding stars of the Winter Olympics, but he failed to quality for Pyeongchang after an ankle ligament injury and was only given a place based on previous performances. Not able to practise jumps until three weeks before the competition, Hanyu defied the pain and remarkably won a second straight gold medal.
