With an amazing final leap, the 25-year-old triple jumper smashed a world record which had stood for 26 years and became the first Venezuelan to win an Olympic athletics gold medal. Her jump of 15.67 metres in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo surpassed the old record of Ukraine’s Inessa Kravets by 17cm. Rojas is also the current triple jump world champion. “I was looking for the record. I knew we had that distance in my legs to get it today," she said, after adding the gold to her silver medal from the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Games.
