As a result of a car crash in 1987 Michael Teuber became semi-paraplegic. Since 1997 he has competed successfully in cycle races for persons with a disability, twice being nominated for the Laureus Disability Award in 2003 and 2004.  In 2007, he recorded world best times in 1,000 metres and 3, 000 metres and won the gold medal for the third straight time in track pursuit, plus three silver medals in the World Championship in Bordeaux.  In November he won two gold and two silver medals in the open Panamerican Championships in Cali, Colombia.  Teuber became a member of the Laureus Friends & Ambassadors programme in Germany in 2005.
