The Laureus World Sports Awards made its debut in Russia in 2008, with St. Petersburg as the host city, and the audience was treated to a ballet performance, accompanied by a live orchestra.

A young Lewis Hamilton was awarded Breakthrough of the Year and Sergey Bubka was honoured with the Laurues Lifetime Achievement Award.
