The 23-year-old Spaniard won the 2020 MotoGP World Championship, becoming the first new racer to take the title since Marc Marquez in 2013. Marquez has been absent since July with a fractured arm. Mir is the first rider to win the world title in Moto3 and in the senior class. He also became the first Suzuki rider to win since Kenny Roberts in 2000.

It was a very important year for me in my sport to be able to win the MotoGP World Championship – and to able, after 20 years, to bring MotoGP title to Team Suzuki Ecstar MotoGP. The Laureus Award is very special and it would be wonderful to win, when you think there are legends like Giacomo Agostini and Mick Doohan in the Laureus Academy.
