On 17 January 2019, he announced he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and had started a six-month course of chemotherapy. In August, two months after his final round of treatment, he won the X-Games snowboarding big air event in Oslo. He kept that going in 2020 with X-Games golds in big air in January in Aspen and slopestyle in Norway in March.

It feels amazing to be nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award! Was smiling like crazy when I heard the news as it means a lot to me to be recognized for all the hard work I’ve put in to get back on my board. It also inspires me to stay on it!
