In a year of little track and field activity, took a massive step forward to confirm himself as the No.1 pole vaulter in the world. In February, he broke Renaud Lavillenie's six-year-old world record with a jump of 6.17 metres in Poland and increased it a week later in Glasgow to 6.18m. When athletics returned, in the Rome Golden Gala Pietro Mennea Diamond League event, he broke Laureus Academy Member Sergey Bubka’s outdoor world best with 6.15m.

This is a great honour for me. Everyone in pole vaulting admires and respects the great Sergey Bubka, and of course he is a member of the Laureus Academy, so it makes it even more special that I have been nominated for this very special Award.
