Spain won their first ever Women’s World Cup in 2023. They beat England 1-0 in the final with a goal from captain Olga Carmona and also missed a penalty. With a game built around possession and skill, midfield player Aitana Bonmatí was named Player of the Tournament and Jennifer Hermoso received the Silver Ball. Salma Paralluelo, 19, won the Young Player Award. All three scored three goals. Despite a 4-0 group stage defeat by Japan, Spain reached the knockout rounds where they beat Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden to go through to the final. They became Europe's third world champions after Norway (1995) and Germany (2003, 2007).
