‘Sport has the power to change the world’ – Nelson Mandela, 2000 Laureus World Sports Awards

Winner
Winner of the 2023 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed a highly successful 2025 in fierce competition with Italy’s Jannik Sinner. The pair met in three consecutive Grand Slam finals with Alcaraz coming out on top with two victories - at Roland-Garros, where he recovered from two sets down and saved three Championship points, and the US Open. Although he lost in four sets at Wimbledon, Alcaraz’s memorable year included an ATP Masters 1000 winning streak of 17 games and three ATP 1000 titles. He ended the year with a 71-9 win-loss record and the World No.1 ranking.

In Madrid, Alcaraz was presented with his Laureus statuette by Luís Figo and Iker Casillas. With his family present, the young Spanish tennis player addressed the room with pride; first paying tribute to his fellow Nominees and then reflecting on his 2025 season:

“This prize recognizes my 2025 season, a season that was full of unforgettable moments for me. Winning two Grand Slams and finishing the year as number one is something I dreamed of since I was a little kid. But when I look back, I do not only think about the trophies and the results. I think about the journey, the work, the difficult moments, the people who stayed by my side, and everything I learned along the way. And, honestly, that is why this Award is so emotional for me.”
